Our Story

Haki Data Lab was founded by three long-time social justice activists — Stephen Mwangi, Wevyn Muganda and Anthony Adoyo — with over a decade of experience each working alongside marginalised communities in Kenya. Through this work, they saw how data is often extracted from communities by international and corporate actors, with little ownership or benefit returned to the people it represents.

After completing the Data4Change Fellowship they co-created the Under Curfew project, using community-led research to document lived experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. This collaboration helped shape a shared vision for a different approach to data, one rooted in community ownership, participation, and accountability.

Building on this, Stephen, Anthony and Wevyn founded Haki Data Lab to support grassroots organisations and underserved communities to collect, analyze, and use their own data to drive change. Data4Change played an important supporting role in the early development of the organisation and continues to collaborate on key initiatives.

Looking ahead, Haki Data Lab is committed to strengthening community-led data practices, supporting communities to generate their own evidence, challenge unequal data systems, and use data as a tool for justice and transformation.
