What do you do for work? I have four years experience as a Waste Picker. I completed and graduated in vocational training and am also skilled and trained in Upcycling.
Before working with Haki Data Lab, had you ever collected data before? Yes, I have collected data before while working with community and waste management projects. I helped record information on the types and amounts of waste collected, as well as people’s recycling practices. That experience taught me the importance of accuracy, patience, and consistency, and I believe these skills will be valuable for your research team.
Tell us about your “superpowers”! Everyone has one, what are yours? I am good at public speaking, organizing people, a fashionista and I also have the ability to turn trash into treasure. My friends and family describe me as dependable and hardworking, someone who can be trusted to get things done. They also say I’m approachable, positive, and good at bringing people together, which makes it easy for me to work well with others.
What brings you joy in your daily life? I love that my work turns what others throw away into something valuable. Small wins like finding a usable item, helping a neighbor dispose of rubbish properly, or finishing a long day with my team. Keeps me motivated.
Share a memory that makes you proud of yourself! I’ll never forget the day I helped clean up a large dumping site near a school. The children could finally play without fear of stepping on sharp objects, and the teachers thanked me personally. It made me proud knowing my work has a real impact on others. I may be a waste picker, but I see myself as more than that. I’m a provider, a community helper, and someone who believes even small efforts can bring big change. I am proud of my work and always eager to grow.
